Abstract
An archaeological and heritage desk-based assessment for proposed mineral extraction adjacent to the River Calder at Stanley Ferry. The study established heritage assets within the area, identified predicted effects (including upon the setting of designated assets) and proposed evaluation and mitigation measures. Information sources included the West Yorkshire HER, Historic England, libraries and archives for documentary, published, cartographic and photographic data, and a site walkover survey of the development area. Sites recorded within the application boundaries were a former smallholding, pond, well, sand pit, drainage ditch and field boundaries. Further evaluation of the area proposed, initially by means of geophysical survey, to clarify the results of the assessment, identify possible palaeochannels or former alignments of the River Calder and establish the archaeological potential of the area.
