Abstract
In response to a condition placed on the planning permission for development at Elms Farm, 57 High Street, Barkway, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the developer to undertake a programme of building recording and archaeological monitoring of the development groundworks. It was considered that the present investigation had the potential to contribute to an understanding of the development of the buildings and the origins and development of the settlement at Barkway. The building recording demonstrated that the barn had been constructed in two phases, with the North Range the earliest part of the structure. The South Range had been added at a later date, but was in existence by 1878. This was originally an open-fronted structure of 6 bays, but had been enclosed in the late 20th century. The early configuration of the bays had also been slightly altered with the amalgamation of bays to form larger spaces. The archaeological monitoring revealed a line of post settings and stakeholes that possibly pre-date the construction of the South Range. These were located on the western side of the barn, but offset to the existing alignment. The probable line of boundary wall, shown on the 1st edition map of 1878, was also encountered in the footings for the new garage. No features, deposits or artefacts of earlier than post-medieval date were revealed, suggesting that earlier evidence has either been destroyed or deeply buried by post-medieval activity.
