Abstract
Este artículo examina las políticas de seguridad ciudadana y la reforma policial en Canadá en los últimos 25 años. La Carta Canadiense de Derechos y Libertadesha establecido en el artículo 7 la garantía de 'seguridad de la persona'. La búsqueda de esta garantía ha asumido, por un lado, una tensión entre la descentralización, la retirada del Estado y el papel de la policía y, por otro lado, una tensión entre su mandato de preservar el orden público, entendido como la salvaguardia del Estado y la protección de los ciudadanos. Si bien estas tensiones son problemáticas, no han impedido que Canadá sea un país seguro con bajas tasas de criminalidad y un fuerte sentido de seguridad entre los ciudadanos.
