Abstract
Halkevleri Cumhuriyet dönemi Türkiye’sinin önemli kültürel kurumlarındandır. Atatürk ilke ve inkılaplarını yurt çapında yaymak ve Türk halkının bilgi ve kültürel seviyesini artırmak amacıyla 19 Şubat 1932 tarihinde kurulmuşlardır. \nAfyon Halkevi de ülke çapında ilk açılan Halkevlerinden birisidir. Halkevi talimatnamesine uygun olarak bütün şubeleriyle faaliyete başladıktan sonra Afyon merkez, ilçe ve köylerde halkın her yönden gelişmesi için çalışmıştır. Tiyatro gösterileri, köy gezileri, sağlık taramaları, hasta ve fakir halk ve öğrencilere yardım, ziraatla ilgili bilgilendirme toplantıları, bölgedeki tarihi eserlerin toplanıp müzeye konulması, gençleri zararlı alışkanlıklardan koruyup spora yönlendirmek gibi çok önemli faaliyetler gerçekleştirmiştir.Dönemin siyasi ortamı ile ilgili olarak Afyon Halkevi 8 Ağustos 1951 tarihinde diğer bütün Halkevleri gibi kapatılmıştır. Daha sonra 20 Ekim 1963 tarihinde tekrar açılıp faaliyete başlamışsa da ilk dönemdeki çalışma heyecanı ve aktifliği kalmamış, kısa süre sonra tamamen ortadan kalkmıştır. \nAfyon Halkevinin kuruluşundan kapanışına kadar geçen süre içerisindeki faaliyetleri ve bu faaliyetlerinin halk üzerindeki etkileri Cumhuriyetin ilk yıllarında yurt genelindeki sosyo-kültürel ortama ışık tutabilir.
