Ce cahier est conçu comme un rapport de recherche. Il rend compte des travaux réalisés par l'auteure alors qu'elle effectuait un stage post-doctoral au sein du CRISES. Entre avril 1998 et mars 1999, elle a bénéficié d'une bourse du CRDI pour mener une étude dans le domaine de l'agriculture urbaine. Cette bourse lui a permis de réaliser une recherche sur le terrain au Mexique et au Québec. Dans ces deux pays, comme c'est aussi le cas ailleurs, on assiste à la résurgence de l'agriculture vivrière en milieu urbain, sous des formes parfois novatrices. Certaines des expériences en cours s'inscrivent dans une dynamique communautaire. C'est sur elles qu'a porté la recherche. Souvent issues de mouvements sociaux, ces expériences peuvent être assimilées à des initiatives de l'économie sociale. On trouvera dans ce cahier une description analytique détaillée de quatre initiatives de jardins québécois et mexicains. Elle permet de saisir l'originalité de chaque projet tout en dégageant des pistes de réflexion en regard de leur apport potentiel au changement social. Cette description est suivie d'une discussion articulée autour des notions de citoyenneté sociale, solidaire et socio-politique. Y sont identifiés les éléments qui distinguent les projets porteurs de rapports sociaux plus équitables et solidaires de ceux qui contribuent à réifïer les inégalités sociales au Nord comme au Sud.
