Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

In 1949, the Bowman Gray School of Medicine Guild began a bookmobile operation. The Guild's members were the wives of doctors and medical school officials. The book mobile regularly circulated among the patients providing them with books and magazines. The bookmobile volunteers covered the second, third and fifth floors of the then five-story North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Shown here is a teen volunteer, Angela Wagoner, doing the same thing 40 years later in 1989. She was a summer "teen volunteer" who helped filled a need of the staff shortage at North Carolina Baptist Hospital during the summer vacation months. The summer Volunteen program, which is for teenagers between the ages of 14-18, have to commit to two days of volunteering per week from 9am-4pm in order to be eligible. The program was and still is today in 2007, a good way to expose teenagers to a medical center environment and the career opportunities that are available to them.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
