Abstract

Neste artigo, apresento os resultados da pesquisa que venho desenvolvendo, desde julho de 2014, inserida no projeto Uma ordem de homens de religião e de ciência, que tem entre seus objetivos a análise de obras produzidas por missionários jesuítas que atuaram também como homens de ciência. Dentre eles, destaca-se o padre José Sanchez Labrador, autor da obra Paraguay Natural Ilustrado, na qual o missionário descreve a geografia, a fauna e a flora das regiões da Província Jesuítica do Paraguai em que atuou. Para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa, utilizei uma cópia digitalizada do manuscrito da obra – ainda inédita –, que se encontra no Arquivo Romano da Sociedade de Jesus (ARSI), em Roma. A obra foi escrita entre 1771 e 1776 e se divide em quatro partes, sendo que me deterei na análise da quarta parte da obra, em que Sanchez Labrador descreve o emprego terapêutico de insetos, ressaltando suas virtudes e modos de preparo.
