Black Visuality in Canada Through the Decolonial Option: A Sociogenic Account of the Work of Jorian Charlton

Abstract
This thesis is concerned with the production of Black Canadian identity through photographic portraiture and the family photo album. By focusing on the 2021 exhibition Out of Many and the artistic practice of Toronto-based photographer Jorian Charlton, I argue that these images transcend time and break through hegemonic barriers in visual politics to present a more complex Black Canadian identity. I consider the Out of Many exhibition in relation to three additional exhibitions that focus on Black documentary photography: the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Fragments of Epic Memory (2021), Carrie Mae Weems’ The Kitchen Table Series (1990), and Theater Gates’ installation Facsimile Cabinet of Women Origin Stories (2019). I examine Jorian Charlton’s oeuvre and each exhibition as a form of praxis through counter-hegemonic images that generate a Black visuality that is grounded in decolonial thought, the fluidity of identity, and a critical awareness of aesthetics.
