Abstract
: Signs of rapid growth in urban development during the second quarter of the 11th century are clearly visible in the large suburb of madīna Dāniya (Dénia) facing the seafront and the port of the city. In one sector, the suburb was built over a rocky outcrop of local sandstone (a consolidated beach) where signs of large-scale extraction of circular slabs for the production of quern-stones for rotary querns abound. Hundreds of extraction marks remain. The negatives of the upper and lower quern-stones give this away. The study of 12 millstones found between the walls of the houses and their connection to the extractions provide precise information of this specialized industry and contribute to the definition of typological parameters of the rotary hand querns in use in the 11th and 12th centuries.
