Abstract
Georgia is, in geo-strategic, military, economic, etc. terms, one of the important regions of the Caucasus. Due to these features, the country, just like the Caucasus as a whole, has been the scenes of sovereignty battles among the powerful states of the region since ancient times.In fact, throughout history the kings of the powerful states which were established in the west, east, south-east and north of Georgia, a region of the Caucasus, launched campaigns to this country. During the first quarter of the XVIth century, both Shah Ismail I , the founder of the Safavid State in Iran, and Yavuz Sultan Selim , the great Ottoman commander and statesman, during his tenure as the governor of Trabzon before becoming the sultan, embarked on military campaigns to Georgia. As a consequence of his campaigns to the west and south-west of Georgia, Prince Selim attached the Georgian Kingdom of Imereti and Principality of Samtskhe (Saatabago) to the Ottoman State.After his defeat to the Ottomans in the battle of Çaldıran in 1514, Shah Ismail I initiated campaigns to Georgia and annexed to Iran not only the eastern Georgian kingdoms of Kartli and Kakheti, but also the southwestern Georgian principality of Samtskhe (Saatabago), which had been under Ottoman rule until 1515. In this study, campaigns launched by Prince Selim and Shah Ismail I to Georgia are concisely discussed, certain evaluations are made and conclusions are attempted in accordance with the methods of History, within the cause-and-effect relationship, and as far as the facts provided by sources allow
