Abstract
Le pouvoir, qui date de 1938 et fait l'objet en 2003 d'une très belle traduction française publiée par les Presses de l'Université Laval, illustre à merveille la manière moraliste de Russell. Il y est fait un usage peut-être désinvolte des sources sociologiques et historiques, et le projet semble vicié à la racine, puisque Russell s'imagine encore pouvoir formuler des « lois de la dynamique sociale » (p. 4). Mais si l'on ferme un peu les yeux sur les faiblesses « théoriques » de l'ouvrage, on y sent poindre un accent libéral vénérable mais rare — qu'on peut baptiser le libéralisme de la prudence.
