Comparing depression scales and their ability to predict MoCA domain scores

Abstract
Through our ongoing research, we seek to identify early indicators of cognitive change in individuals sixty years of age and older. We are particularly interested in the relationship between depression questionnaires and performance on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), as well as specific scores pertaining to memory, executive functioning, attention and concentration, language, visuospatial, and orientation domains. Time and time again, researchers have noted the correlation between depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment. The Geriatric Depression Scale, Beck's Depression Inventory, and the Center of Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale questionnaires are administered every six months to gauge depressive symptoms. To measure cognitive performance, the MoCA is administered every twelve months. Through our preliminary data analysis, we have identified significant correlations between the MoCA domains of attention and memory with the Geriatric Depression Scale and Center of Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Trends toward significance were identified in language and visuospatial domains as well. Data collection is ongoing and will be re-analyzed to confirm whether these findings extend to the final study sample.
