Abstract

-- \nABSTRACT : Seagrass beds are among the most important coastal ecosystems on the planet, due to their high primary productivity and their habitat engineering properties for many taxa. On a global scale, eelgrass beds (Zostera marina), one of the species of these marine phanerogams, are undergoing a decline in density and area. The local factors limiting their recovery are numerous and affect several scales (ecological, physiological...). Nutrient concentrations are one of these factors and eutrophication of coastal waters is usually a cause of drastic loss of seagrass beds in the world. In some environments, such as James Bay (Quebec, Canada), considered as an oligotrophic system, this decline is also observed but the causes remain poorly understood hence the need to study the factors limiting the recovery of eelgrass in these environments. The east coast of James Bay is characterized by a large inflow of fresh water, mainly from the La Grande River at Chisasibi, and the eelgrass beds along the coast have been experiencing large-scale mortality since the 1990s. The objective of this study is to understand whether the distribution of nutrient concentrations in the water column and in sediments may be one of the factors limiting the recovery of seagrass beds in eastern James Bay. Using physiological indicators such as nitrogen and carbon content as well as isotopic signatures in eelgrass tissue and correlating them with nitrite, nitrate and phosphate concentrations, it appears that nutrients are not limiting in the sediments along the eastern coast of James Bay. The physiological proxies used in this study suggest the presence of another limiting factor, such as light. In order to better understand the factors limiting the resistance and recovery of eelgrass beds, future research will be needed to study on a fine spatio-temporal scale the variations of the water column parameters but also the biogeochemistry of the sediment. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Zostera marina, eelgrass, meadows, James Bay, physiology, nutrients, nitrogen, sediments, isotopic signature.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
