Abstract
Reúnem-se neste volume textos diversos que falam do que foi Portugal entre a primeira metade do século XIX e o primeiro quartel do século XX, com uma ou outra incursão em tempos mais recuados ou mais recentes. O âmbito cronológico estende-se assim desde o colapso do Antigo Regime e da chegada da contemporaneidade liberal, a partir de 1820, até ao final da Primeira República e ao triunfo da nova ordem ditatorial, em 1926, depois cristalizada no Estado Novo. O fio condutor do livro não é dado apenas pela cronologia e pela arrumação sequencial dos textos. Entre todos eles existe alguma continuidade temática e uma articulação que revela os principais temas do Portugal oitocentista e novecentista aqui explorados: os acontecimentos e rupturas, as instituições, leis, projectos, valores, práticas e hábitos que (in)formaram a evolução e cultura políticas, as dinâmicas, espaços, instrumentos e dimensões da opinião pública, e as condições, utopias e limites da consciencialização e exercício da cidadania moderna. A publicação desta colectânea de estudos visa assim disponibilizar num só volume um conjunto de textos cuja soma transmite uma imagem viva, diacrónica e problematizadora do que foi o Portugal contemporâneo, uma realidade de passado recente e de inegável importância como chave de leitura para o presente e o futuro do país, porque foi nesse primeiro século da época contemporânea que Portugal e os portugueses se transformaram em muito daquilo que ainda hoje são.
