Abstract
Un des impacts les plus frappants du réchauffement climatique dans l'Arctique est la réduction du couvert de glace saisonnier, un processus susceptible d'altérer la dynamique de l'écosystème pélagique et les flux océan-atmosphère de gaz climatiquement actifs tel que le dimethyl sulfure (DMS). Afin de vérifier cette hypothèse, j'ai caractérisé la distribution et le métabolisme bactérien du DMS et de son précurseur algal le diméthylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) le long d'une radiale longitudinale s'étendant de la baie de Baffin à la mer de Beaufort au cours de l'automne 2007. Mes résultats mettent en évidence des concentrations faibles mais toujours détectables des réservoirs de DMSP et DMS et des temps de renouvellement bactérien du DMSP dissous rapides malgré les températures des eaux extrêmement faibles. L'ensemble de mes résultats suggère que l'extension automnale de la période libre de glace pourrait résulter en une augmentation des flux de DMS vers l'atmosphère et contribuer au refroidissement du climat.
