Au début des années 40, de jeunes artistes motivés par une volonté de transformer les valeurs établies, tant esthétiques que socio-politiques, se rassemblent autour de Borduas et forment le groupe des automatistes. Ces artistes envisagent l'avènement d'un art nouveau, d'une peinture "vivante", c'est-à-dire libérée de toute idéologie et que l'on conçoit alors comme abstraite. L'Automatisme participe à l'émergence d'une pratique de la Modernité au Québec en posant d'entrée de jeu la question de l'abstraction et en provoquant un affrontement entre les tenants d'un art figuratif et ceux d'un art nouvellement nonfiguratif. Dans le milieu culturel québécois, on assiste ainsi à une volonté de définition de l'esthétique automatiste mais également au désir d'une plus grande compréhension des deux pôles de l'art de cette époque, l'abstraction et la non-figuration. Les artistes automatistes visent à la fois une peinture nonfigurative et une transformation de l'espace traditionnel. Pourtant, ils n'abordent pas, dans l'ensemble, l'abstraction proprement dite: avec l'Automatisme, on quitte la semi-figuration pour parvenir à la semi-abstraction. C'est pourquoi on ne peut considérer l'Automatisme comme une première apparition d'un art pictural québécois résolument abstrait: en ne réussissant pas à modifier en profondeur les structures de composition de l'espace traditionnel, cette pratique aura plutôt joué le rôle de catalyseur dans la transformation radicale de cet espace.
