Van 1947 tot 1963 emigreerden bijna 410.000 Nederlanders overzee, van wie de meerderheid zich vestigde in Canada of de Verenigde Staten. Onder hen bevonden zich opvallend veel meer gereformeerden dan hervormden en katholieken. Deze gereformeerden, zo laat Enne Koops in zijn boek over deze uittocht zien, waren vooral afkomstig uit de Gereformeerde Kerken in Nederland en minder uit de Gereformeerde Kerken (vrijgemaakt), de Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerken en de Gereformeerde Gemeenten. Koops brengt de stimulerende en remmende factoren van christelijke emigratieculturen in kaart. Hij volgt de katholieke, hervormde en gereformeerde emigratieculturen van het begin tot het eind en vergelijkt deze op het niveau van emigratietraditie, visie, organisatie en emigratiebereidheid. Ook worden de religieuze aspecten van het emigreren zelf, per schip en vliegtuig, aan de orde gesteld. Ter afsluiting behandelt Koops de kerkkeuze en de integratie van Nederlandse geloofsgroepen in Noord-Amerika
