Submarine gravity flows build some of the largest accumulations of sediment on Earth and they host a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas reservoirs. Hybrid event beds (HEBs) are a type of deep- water sediment gravity deposit that consist of an argillaceous mud-clast rich division (debrite) that overlays a banded or structureless sandstone (turbidite). HEBs are becoming more commonly recognized as a key element of deep-water systems across a wide range of tectonic settings. However, the distribution of HEBs, where they are found within the stratigraphic framework, and their downflow trends are still being investigated. Furthermore, the role of mud in the transformation of these flows from high density turbulent flows to laminar debritic flows is not well understood. The focus of this study investigates downflow facies transitions within HEBs of the Lower Cloridorme Formation of the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec, with a focus on facies descriptions and the systematic changes in the mud content and mud clasts in various divisions of the HEBs. The well-exposed beds along the coast of the Gaspé Peninsula allow for detailed facies classifications and tracing of individual beds. Results highlight the diversity, complexity, and abrupt downstream changes of HEB facies, which contributes to our understanding of the dynamics of hybrid flows in deep water depositional systems. Furthermore, mud clasts have been suggested to play a key role in the generation of hybrid flows. This study presents a preliminary investigation into the correlation between mud clast dimensions and the mud content within the matrix, and how their incorporation relates to the flow transformation process. Preliminary results from grain size analysis and Fourier power spectra (FPS)-based elliptic Fourier analysis of mud clasts highlight downflow changes in the sizes and shapes of mud clasts. Overall, this study investigates where HEBs are found within the stratigraphic framework and their depositional processes. Hybrid event beds in the Cloridorme Fm. are interpreted to form from either avulsion or by longitudinal fractionation as the flow moves across the muddy seafloor.
