Abstract
El objetivo del presente trabajo es introducirnos brevemente en el concepto de patrimonio cultural y de su importancia como recurso económico y como factor posible de convertirse en el motor de desarrollo económico de una comunidad entera. El ejemplo que se incluye referido a Quebec, Canadá, nos demuestra claramente las posibilidades de éxito de emprendimientos semejantes en la reactivación de la economía local. Otro modelo citado, como ejemplo de desarrollo sustentable de un área natural recuperada y parte del Plan de Rescate Ecológico de Xochimilco de 1989, es el Parque Ecológico de Xochimilco (PEX), ubicado en el Distrito Federal de México. El mismo constituye una alternativa novedosa en la planificación del paisaje y planes de manejo en la rehabilitación de un medio natural. Bajo este marco introductorio, se profundiza en los fundamentos de una reserva de biosfera, concepto creado por el Programa MAB-UNESCO y se analiza su aplicación concreta en el Parque Pereyra Iraola de la provincia de Buenos Aires. Por último, se exponen algunos de los conflictos y potencialidades generados en la búsqueda satisfactoria de un desarrollo sustentable del recurso tanto ambiental como social
