Los inmigrantes extracomunitanios y su proceso de inserción se presentan como uno de los fenómenos que conforman la Valencia actual y futura. En este artículo se exponen sus características y su desigual distribución en la ciudad, según los datos del Padrón Municipal de Habitantes y su evolución desde 1998 hasta 2002. La inserción residencial de los inmigrados se sintetizo en una tipología de barrios donde su presencia es más abundante. Se comenta la forma de convivencia y la sociabilidad que genera, en comparación con otras ciudades, particularmente París y Montreal. La inserción urbana de los inmigrantes constituye un fenómeno muy dinámico, por lo que se plantean algunos de los posibles cambios en el futuro inmediato que merecen una especial atención.
