Abstract
Indiana's new controversial religious freedom law's being used by Mayor Emanuel to try to lure businesses back to Chicago. The Sun-Times says Emanuel's using the backlash over the law as an opportunity to encourage businesses to consider moving, after Indiana used Illinois' pension crisis to do the same thing. There are billboards up near the state line advertising Indiana's business friendly climate, compared to high taxes in Illinois. Mayor Emanuel says he sent a letter to a couple hundred major Indiana businesses telling them Chicago is a welcoming place and warned them Indiana's new law will lead to discrimination against gay employees. He says that will make it hard for Hoosier companies to recruit the most talented workers.....and says Chicago is a city that welcomes diversity. Chicago Area Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce Director Gerardo Rodriguez tells the Tribune, business owners in the city are worried they'll lose contracts with their vendors in Indiana because of what he calls blind discrimination.
