La presente investigación examina la evolución del microcrédito en Colombia para el periodo 2005 – 2015, producto que ha logrado posicionarse en el mercado financiero como una alternativa a las necesidades de recursos de capital, desde su reglamentación por medio la Ley 590 de 2000. Para ello se realizó una exhaustiva revisión de la literatura existente dirigida al campo de las microfinanzas, y a estudios realizados en este mismo campo, gracias a los cuales fue posible profundizar en las características del microcrédito, las fortalezas dentro del mercado colombiano y sus diferencias frente a otros productos de financiamiento a corto plazo. La forma práctica se fundamentó en los datos arrojados por instituciones como Banco de la Republica, Asobancaría, Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia, y el programa Banca de las Oportunidades, las cuales cumplen un papel fundamental al analizar las tasas de interés, la participación de mercado, la cantidad de clientes, los tipos y calificación de carteras de los diferentes productos, entre otros. Con lo anterior se obtuvo que, según los indicadores de gestión presentados por el microcrédito en el periodo de estudio, este se configura como una alternativa financiera rentable y de gran aceptación en el mercado colombiano
