Abstract
The Angelic Upstarts are a UK hardcore oi punk band that have dozens of releases under their belt. They wrote some of the most impassioned please for social justice in the punk rock campaign with specific focuses on facsism, anti racism, working class themes. They were from Northern England which was at the heart of the Coal Miners strike during the Thatcher era and the singer, Mensi, was a coal miner at the time. They were in Toronto for a rare live show on May 31st, 2014 and I got to speak to the singer about a lot of the great songs that he wrote and I grew up thinking as anthems in the punk scene. The show is this interview interspersed with a back catalogue of the Upstarts.
