Abstract
The thought of the building one day decaying and returning \nback into the earth is usually not considered by an \narchitect designing a new building. This thesis explores \nthemes of temporality, ephemerality, and observation \nbased analysis within the architectural design process. \nThe concept of temporality is evaluated in the work of \nartists Andy Goldsworthy and Gordon Matta-Clark. In \naddition, their creative processes are studied toward \nestablishing an architectural design methodology. The \nruins of an abandoned cement plant in the ghost town \nof Marlbank Ontario is analyzed through a series of site \nvisits occurring throughout the 2020 - 2021 academic \nyear. Observations of the site and ruins were documented \nthrough text, drawings and photography. Parallel to the \n‘observations’ a series of ‘installations’ were completed \nat various scales. Experiences of isolated contemplation \nand subjective exploration on the abandoned landscape \nwhile creating these artworks informs an architectural \nprogram and design for two distinct cabins - taking direct \ninfluence of their surrounding environments and reflecting \na consciousness of the temporary.
