Abstract
Les Basses-Terres du Saint-Laurent renferment des saumures ayant des salinités équivalentes à 10 fois la salinité de l'eau de mer. Ces saumures, trouvées dans les unités cambro-ordoviciennes du Potsdam, Beekmantown, Chazy, Black River et Trenton, sont parfois associées à des accumulations de gaz naturel. Junex Inc. possède plusieurs puits dans la région de Bécancour où l'on retrouve ces saumures et accumulations de gaz naturel. On développa donc, en partenariat avec la société Junex, un projet permettant de caractériser les saumures en y analysant les concentrations et les rapports isotopiques en gaz rares. L'objectif initial de ce projet était de déterminer la provenance de ces saumures, d'évaluer un temps de résidence et de contraindre un âge de migration, s'il y avait lieu.
