Abstract
A late winter walk along the Economical Insurance Trailway, a 3 kilometre (linear) link in the 42 km Walter Bean Grand River Trail, traversing wooded river valley slopes behind Kitchener’s industrial lands. The trail, located along the eastern fringe of the Waterloo moraine, generally follows the valley crest, with some areas about 25 metres above the river . The river course approximately follows the western limit of the ice lobe advancing from the bed of Lake Ontario during the most recent Wisconsinan glaciation. The region’s rolling topography, typical of ground moraines, emerged during the glacial retreat about 12 millennia ago. The Riverbend Drive trailhead features an interesting assemblage of locally gathered Canadian Shield glacial erratics transported south for hundreds of kilometres by glaciers originating in the Laurentide ice sheet and gathered from the nearby surroundings. Several piers from the People’s Railway Company (1909-1913), visible from the path, are remnants of an aborted 120 metre crossing downstream from Bridgeport. A stream near the trailhead drains seeps and springs from Spring Valley Road across from Conestoga Parkway ( Ontario Highway 85).
