Abstract
Leaders from the U.S. Coast Guard provided an update to members of a House Transportation and Infrastructure subcommittee on the progress of the organization's Polar Security Cutter program (PSC). The program, which has seen numerous delays, is intended to construct a heavy icebreaker vessel operated by the Coast Guard to maintain defense readiness and enforce laws among other services in the arctic region. Committee members expressed their concern over the potential national security risk with the U.S. only having two vessels in its fleet compared to China's four and Russia's more than 40. The hearing comes a day after the U.S. signed an icebreaker pact with Canada and Finland to share information to better develop icebreakers for their countries.
