Reseñas sobre la doctrina paulina y el diálogo ecuménico.Es el resultado de diez años de investigación, como muestran también los artículos publicados, en los años ochenta, sobre determinados aspectos del tema.Según afirma el autor, en este libro ha querido exponer «la historia de la doctrina cristiana de la justificación como una materia compleja y de enorme interés, que merece una cuidadosa consideración» (p.395).El contenido está dividido en nueve capítulos, según un criterio histórico-teológico.Un capítulo introductorio se ocupa de exponer la noción de justificación y su fundamento .Teniendo en cuenta que la enseñanza de San Agustín es clave para comprender la doctrina de la justificación, se dedica un capítulo a este tema, dentro de su contexto histórico del obispo de Hipona (cap.2).Sobre esta base, el autor examina con detenimiento, en un capítulo que ocupa más de 100 páginas.el desarrollo de la doctrina sobre la justicia de Dios y la justificación en la época medieval, considerando también los sacramentos, la gracia y el mérito, la predestinación y el papel de los hábitos sobrenaturales en la justificación (cap.3).Expone seguidamente la doctrina de la justificación tal como era entendida por las distintas escuelas teológicas medievales (cap.4).Después de estudiar el período de transición entre la Edad Media y la Edad Moderna con el fin de identificar posibles precursores de las doctrinas de la Reforma (cap.5), el estudio se centra en la doctrina de la justificación desarrollada por el luteranismo y por el catolicismo, esta última sobre todo en tomo al Concilio de Trento (caps.6 y 7).La doctrina de la justificación según la Reforma inglesa se trata en un capítulo aparte (cap.8).El estudio concluye con la época moderna y contemporánea.que incluye el reciente debate ecuménico sobre el tema.Al final de libro se ofrece una amplia bibliografía.un índice de nombres y, en apéndice.un glosario de términos soteriológicos medievales.Es un status quaestionis llevado a cabo con rigor, ampliamente documentado y con una exposición clara.que refleja bien la tra-AHlg 9 (2000)
