Abstract
Chapter one is a meta-analysis of the reliability of the Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia. This scale was developed for assessing symptoms of depression in individuals with schizophrenia, but no review has explored its reliability across studies using advanced statistical means. The internal consistency meta-analytic effect was 0.83 (95% CI: 0.82-0.84) and the inter-rater reliability meta-analytic effect was 0.88 (95% CI: 0.86-0.91). This review suggests the scale has good internal consistency and excellent inter-rater reliability. Further research regarding test-retest reliability would develop understanding of its psychometric properties. Chapter two is an empirical paper exploring how couples experience an episode of postpartum psychosis (PP) when treatment occurs in a Mother and Baby Unit (MBU). Existing research is limited on how couples experience PP with no studies focusing on treatment setting, despite treatment within a MBU recommended. Mothers and their partners were interviewed to explore their experiences of PP when the mother was treated in a MBU. Multi-perspectival interpretative phenomenological analysis identified widespread effects of PP on the couple and family system. Insight is provided into the benefits and challenges couples experienced due to the mother’s MBU admission, developing understanding of this population’s needs and important areas for services to consider.
