Shortly after receiving her MD from the University of Toronto, Dr. Hegyeli was invited to Albert Szent-Gyorgyi's laboratory in Woods Hole. As Szent-Gyorgyi's research associate from 1963 to 1965, she established and operated a tissue culture lab for his Institute for Muscle Research. Following this, Dr. Hegyeli became principal investigator for several cancer research projects at the Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio. In 1969 she joined the National Institutes of Health as a research scientist. She is currently Associate Director for International Programs at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at NIH.
