Töö uurib Johan Elmi lavastajakäekirja psühholoogilise teatri võtmes, keskendudes sellele, kuidas tegelaste sisemised seisundid muutuvad laval nähtavaks. Analüüs põhineb kahe lavastuse, „Tule õige koju!“ ja „Musträstas“ analüüsil ning tugineb Stanislavski läbielamise kontseptsioonile ja Erika Fischer-Lichte teatrimärgiteooriale. Uurimuse fookuses on viis märgikategooriat (keel, hääl, miimika, žestid ja ruumikasutus), mille kaudu näitleja sisemine töö kehastub vaatajale tajutaval moel.
