Abstract
El Paraguay Católico is a chronicle completed in 1770 by the Spanish Jesuit José Sánchez Labrador (1714 or 1717-1798), in which he recounts his experience of more than seven years as a missionary among the Eyiguayegui (also known as Guaicuru or Mbayá) in the pueblo of Belén, located in the province of Paraguay. Since its publication in 1910, scholars have looked for elements of Indigenous cultures in this text, but there is still a lack of studies on the variety of evangelization program it advocated. I argue that the author preferred an accommodating approach to evangelization due to the autonomy and military power enjoyed by the Eyiguayegui at the time, which prevented the use of more coercive methods. In the chronicle, accommodation emerges as a viable strategy for Jesuit engagement with independent Indigenous groups, particularly as Iberians increasingly interacted with these communities along the American frontiers by the mid-1700s.
