Abstract
Fondée en 1853, la Société littéraire de La Prairie connaît un succès remarquable durant ses premières années, offrant un exemple typique du mouvement d'association qui traverse le Bas-Canada au milieu du XIXe siècle. Mais au début du XXe siècle, la Société a perdu son dynamisme d'autrefois, et les activités intellectuelles n’y occupent plus guère de place. En 1923, l’abbé Élisée Choquet, jeune vicaire ambitieux, rejoint la Société avec l'espoir d'en raviver les premières ambitions et de revitaliser l’esprit intellectuel de La Prairie. Il propose différentes réformes, qui, malgré un accueil favorable, ne rencontrent pas le succès espéré. L’échec de l’abbé Choquet, qui quitte la Société en 1936, peut s'expliquer par son approche anachronique, plus en phase avec les « Instituts canadiens » du XIXe siècle qu’avec les mouvements nationalistes et catholiques des années 1930.
