Abstract
El complejo sistema comercial de los mexicas postclásicos de la Cuenca de México (1325-1521 d.C.) es analizado bajo la perspectiva económica sustantivista expuesta por el filósofo Karl Polanyi (1886, Viena-1964, Ontario). Se pone atención especial en tres aspectos de la actividad comercial náhuatl: los mercaderes pochtecas, el dinero prehispánico y la estructura de mercado. Existe coincidencia en la premisa general del modelo teórico, es decir, cómo la interacción surgida entre el hombre y su medio ambiente logra establecer relaciones socioeconómicas intra y extragrupales compartidas por distintas agrupaciones culturales, dentro de pequeñas localidades o en un amplio espacio geográfico.
