Abstract
Dans l’histoire politique et parlementaire du Bas-Canada ou Canada-Est, les 22 et 23 janvier 1849 représentent deux dates cruciales qui correspondent au début de la marginalisation des Rouges et de Papineau. Lorsque Papineau se lève le 22 janvier pour continuer d’affirmer son désaccord avec l’Union et la représentation parlementaire égale, les dés sont joués électoralement. La Fontaine, l’homme qui le 13 septembre 1842 a parlé français dans une Assemblée législative qui avait prohibé l’usage parlementaire de cette langue (voir Thomas CHAPAIS, Cours d’histoire du Canada, Québec, Librairie Garneau, 1933, t. V, p. 89, 289-299), se lève à nouveau pour signifier à Papineau et aux anti-unionistes que leur stratégie de rappel de l’Union n’a pas fonctionné et que la représentation égale en Chambre sauvait alors et sauverait le Canada français. La Fontaine réitère son choix de fonctionner dans les institutions existantes et de rassembler tous les réformistes, sans considération de langue ou de nationalité. Là encore, il préfigure la tradition fédéraliste.
