Il existe de multiples approches de la gouvernance. Qu'elle soit définie comme contrôle ou comme coordination, la gouvernance est fortement liée à la question du pouvoir. Or le pouvoir ne se circonscrit pas aussi facilement que la responsabilité légale. Aussi, au-delà du statut juridique, il importe de repérer la variété de configurations de gouvernance. L'auteure procède en relisant les configurations organisationnelles et en les réinterprétant pour tenir compte des pratiques du tiers secteur et pour faire ressortir précisément leurs configurations de gouverne et de gestion, en termes de participation à l'orientation des activités et de coordination des activités de l'organisation ou de l'entreprise collective. Elle distingue six configurations de gouverne : 1) la gouverne missionnaire locale ou globale ; 2) la gouverne démocratique participative ; 3) la gouverne démocratique représentative ; 4) la gouverne entrepreneuriale, en solo ou locale ; 5) la gouverne par contrat de performance ; 6) la gouverne intégrée. Du côté de la gestion, huit configurations ressortent : 1) la gestion missionnaire ou militante ; 2) la gestion en solo ; 3) la gestion démocratique participative ou autogestion ; 4) la gestion démocratique représentative ou cogestion ; 5) la gestion mécaniste décentralisée ; 6) la gestion mécaniste intégrale ; 7) la gestion globale par contrat de performance ; 8) la gestion globale missionnaire.
