Abstract
La Repubblica di Lucca a metà Settecento è uno stato oligarchico caratterizzato da una politica estera fortemente conservatrice. La storiografia degli ultimi due secoli insiste sulla neutralità della Repubblica in epoca moderna. A tale neutralità furono di aiuto atteggiamenti prudenti e azioni di nascondimento. L'analisi delle fonti dell'Offizio sopra le Differenze de' confini e delle lettere di Ottavio Sardi, mercante lucchese a Amsterdam, mostrano un'azione politica di più ampio respiro volta alla difesa della Libertas.
