Fort de son expérience au sein du Groupe de travail sur la réforme du curriculum (primaire et secondaire), l'auteur de cet article présente un survol du renouveau pédagogique au secondaire en proposant quelques clés pour mieux le comprendre. Pour ce faire, il s'appuie sur les différents changements apportés au curriculum depuis 1959 dans le réseau scolaire québécois, tout en mentionnant que l'ancien programme d'études sert d'assises au nouveau. Il explicite aussi tous les changements en lien avec la recherche de savoirs durables chez les élèves, notamment sur le plan des compétences transversales et des remembrements de contenus de programme. Abordant le changement de représentation de l'enseignant et de son rôle, rendu nécessaire par le renouveau, il mentionne la libération de l'espace professionnel et les difficultés qui en découlent, dont la réappropriation de l'exercice du jugement dans l'évaluation, la présentation concentrique des manuels nécessitant un travail d'appoint de la part de l'enseignant, ainsi que le manque de tradition du travail d'équipe d'enseignants de matières différentes. L'auteur souligne enfin les avantages reliés à la nouvelle perspective culturelle inscrite comme orientation générale du programme d’études.
