Par cette recherche qualitative, nous avons voulu identifier dans le discours des acteurs locaux du développement les facteurs qui peuvent influencer la viabilité de leurs communautés. \n \nIl s'agit d'une étude de cas, celui de la MRC d'Abitibi et de ses communautés forestières. En adoptant une approche à la fois ethnographique et monographique, nous avons eu l'ambition de traiter l'ensemble des préoccupations majeures des citoyens interrogés, afin d'extraire de leur discours les contraintes et les atouts de la viabilité. Cette démarche impliquait naturellement un travail de terrain ainsi que des entrevues semi dirigées réalisées sur la base de trois grands thèmes : le rapport à la forêt, le potentiel humain, et l'organisation socio-politique. \n \nEffectivement, la présence marquée de la forêt et de ses ressources dans le paysage économique et social de ces petites collectivités se traduit par une certaine dépendance économique envers ces ressources forestières, surtout envers les ressources ligneuses. Nous avons donc voulu comprendre comment les citoyens de ces communautés forestières perçoivent cette situation et ce contexte socio-forestier particulier. \n \nLa viabilité étant appréhendée ici comme synonyme de vitalité d'une localité, de développement humain, économique et environnemental à long terme. Ainsi, trois familles de facteurs se sont imposées lors de l'analyse : des facteurs idéologiques, des facteurs technico-économiques, et des facteurs socio-politiques. \n
