En France, la population vieillit. Ce problème de santé publique est le cœur de l actualité. Les personnes âgées, souvent polypathologiques, sont de grandes consommatrices de médicaments. La question se pose donc de la qualité de leurs prescriptions.Face à cette situation, des outils d aide à la prescription se sont développés, en particulier aux Etats-Unis et au Canada, avec élaboration de listes de médicaments à éviter. La liste de Médicaments Potentiellement Inappropriés (PIMs) chez les sujets âgés de 75 ans et plus, établie à la suite de ces travaux par ML Laroche, est particulièrement intéressante, puisqu elle s applique à la pratique médicale française. Une étude de la fréquence de prescription des PIMs a été réalisée au CHU d Angers à partir de cette liste française. Elle présente des résultats alarmants: 42,3% des patients étudiés ont au moins un PIM dans leur prescription. Les benzodiazépines sont les molécules les plus incriminées. Ces résultats sont cohérents avec les autres études effectuées dans le même domaine. Ces observations mettent en évidence la nécessité d accroître la vigilance du personnel de santé lors de la prescription et la délivrance de médicaments dans la population âgée. Dans ce cadre, la diffusion d une telle liste pourrait aider à promouvoir la qualité des traitements du sujet âgé.
