Abstract
La politique guerrière de Louis XIV a favorisé en France la création d’un corps d’ingénieurs militaires. Certains d’entre eux, envoyés en Nouvelle-France, lèvent des cartes, travaillent aux dessins et réalisations des fortifications, des bâtiments civils ou des travaux hydrauliques. Le commissaire général des fortifications, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, contraint de rester en France mais passionné de ces terres auxquelles il prédit un grand avenir, veille jalousement au choix de ces ingénieurs et supervise leurs réalisations, contribuant très largement à la diffusion des techniques en matière de construction, mais aussi d’aménagement économique et d’organisation administrative. Ce passeur entre deux mondes a parfaitement compris l’enjeu du développement du Canada français menacé par les colonies anglaises, comme l’indique son mémoire adressé à Jérôme de Maurepas, secrétaire d’État à la marine : « Moyens de rétablir nos colonies d’Amérique et de les accroître en peu de temps ».
