À l'instar du reste du Québec, la ville de Sherbrooke connaît, au tournant du 20e siècle, une période de prospérité économique. Les manufactures fonctionnent à plein régime, le secteur de la construction se porte bien, bref le travail ne manque pas. Toutefois, ce plein emploi ne signifie pas une éradication complète de la pauvreté. Dans un des quartiers ouvriers de la ville, le quartier sud, c'est plus du quart des familles qui ne peuvent subvenir à leurs besoins essentiels ayant comme seul revenu celui de leur chef. Pour parvenir à survivre quotidiennement, les membres d'une même famille se doivent de s'organiser. Plusieurs stratégies financières sont mises de l'avant : s'occuper d'un jardin, élever des animaux, prendre des pensionnaires, faire travailler l'épouse, etc. Le travail des enfants, jeunes et moins jeunes, en est une autre. Dans bien des cas, ces derniers sont retirés relativement tôt de l'école, parfois à 12 ans, pour aller gagner quelques sous. C'est une situation que l'on retrouve principalement dans les familles où le chef a une occupation de travailleur semi-spécialisé ou non spécialisé.
