Les démocraties libérales contemporaines, culturellement diverses, exigent de réfléchir aux enjeux que soulèvent les tensions qui existent entre l'égalité et les différences fondées sur l'origine ethnoculturelle. Dans cette optique, notre démarche cherche à éclairer certaines difficultés spécifiques auxquelles font face des femmes vivant au Québec et appartenant à des minorités ethnoculturelles dans leur processus d'inclusion et d'intégration à la société québécoise.

\nPlus précisément, nous tenterons d'évaluer si Pinterculturalisme, tel que présenté dans le rapport de la Commission Bouchard-Taylor, définit des frontières sociales et symboliques assurant l'inclusion et l'intégration des femmes appartenant aux minorités ethnoculturelles en des termes résolument démocratiques et féministes. Pour étayer notre réflexion et afin de circonscrire notre recherche, nous nous concentrerons exclusivement sur la polémique entourant le port du foulard islamique (hidjab) au Québec. Les citoyennes québécoises des minorités ethnoculturelles qui portent le hidjab évoluent-elles dans un contexte social, culturel et politique leur permettant de participer pleinement à la vie publique? Nous étudierons cette question à partir d'une approche féministe et constructiviste centrée sur le concept de rapports sociaux de sexe. Nous ferons également appel au concept de rapports sociaux d'ethnicité tel qu'il a été théorisé par Danielle Juteau. Le concept de frontières sociales et symboliques se retrouve en au coeur de notre démarche.

\nLe premier chapitre exposera notre cadre théorique. Ensuite, nous examinerons les principaux éléments constitutifs du modèle québécois d'interculturalisme. Nous présenterons dans le troisième chapitre les principales critiques féministes des modèles pluralistes de gestion de la diversité. Dans le chapitre suivant, nous traiterons des débats sur le port du foulard au Québec. Enfin, dans le cinquième chapitre, nous soulignerons les forces et les faiblesses de Pinterculturalisme en regard de notre question de recherche.
