Sobre la base de estudios geológicos y paleomagnéticos se realiza un ordenamiento estratigráfico para el Neógeno-Cuaternario del área de las sierras de Balcarce. Se exponen los resultados obtenidos en dos secciones estratigráficas; una corresponde a una cantera en el faldeo sur de la Sierra Bachicha, la otra a un corte de ruta en la localidad Ramos Otero. Mediante trabajo de campo se reconocieron y describieron las unidades sedimentarias y se efectuó el muestreo paleomagnético. Se determinaron cinco zonas de magnetopolaridad en la sección de Sierra Bachicha y una en la de Ramos Otero. La magnetozona superior de ambas secciones, correspondiente al Cron Brunhes (<0,781 Ma), comprende fundamentalmente a dos unidades litoestratigráficas. La más joven está integrada por limos arenosos, eólicos que se habrían depositado principalmente durante el último máximo glacial y que se apoyan en discordancia erosiva sobre una unidad más antigua, de origen fluvial, con abundante CaCO3, cuya edad sería inferior a 450 Ka. Por debajo, en discordancia erosiva, se hallaron en la sección de Sierra Bachicha depósitos de aspecto loessoide, con material psefítico disperso que se consideran de origen coluvial distal. En estos se registraron cambios de polaridad magnética. El más joven, en el tope de la unidad, tendría una edad mínima coincidente con el límite Brunhes-Matuyama (0,781 Ma), el más antiguo, en la base de la cantera, tendría una edad mínima Matuyama medio-Olduvai (1,778 Ma). Si bien no se descartan edades más antiguas, los sedimentos estudiados se habrían depositado con posterioridad a los 3,2 Ma.
