Le roman québécois d'aujourd'hui témoigne d'une profonde métamorphose sociale, parce que depuis longtemps, il s'est créé au Québec une littérature qui exprime la réalité des minorités à l'intérieur du contexte québécois. C'est surtout la transgression des genres, le collage de discours hétérogènes, la fréquence de l'insertion de diverses formes autobiographiques dans le texte, l'encodage d'un discours théorique et l'implication manifeste de l'auteur dans le récit, la réflexion sur l'écriture en gestation et sur le rapport du langage au réel, la présence explicite du narrataire, qui, à différents degrés, confèrent un caractère distinct à tout un courant de la production romanesque des dernières décennies.
\nLa littérature québécoise s'articule désormais sur la tension de l'identitaire et de l'hétérogène. Elle ne peut plus être pensée comme complétude, mais comme ouverture, la diversité n'y étant plus perçue comme une menace, mais comme le signe du réel inévitablement multiple. Espace transfrontalier de la liberté et du désir, elle ne se constitue plus seulement à partir d'un centre fixe, mais se laisse travailler par sa périphérie, sa marge, son étrangeté, devenant le lieu d'échange et de circulation des imaginaires.
