Abstract
Built at Kingston, Ontario in 1871 for Charles F. Gildersleeve, the "Maud" was named for his grand daughter. The vessel was rebuilt as the "America" at Kingston in 1895 for Folger Bros. of the Thousand Island S. B. Co., which later joined with St. Lawrence S. B. Co. as the Folger System, tied up with the N.Y.C. & H.R. Railroad. As the "America," she ran in connection with the steamers "New York" and "Empire State." All used anthracite coal, eliminating smoke. The usual route was from Kingston at 5:00 p.m. stopping at Clayton, Round Isle, 1000 Island Park, Fine View Park, Central Park, Point Vivian, Alexandria Bay, Brockville, Ogdensburg, Cornwall and Montreal, and return to Kingston at 9:00 p.m. In 1921 she was owned by Newton K. Wagg of Midland, Ontario and in 1922 renamed "City of Midland" and then "Midland City." Her side wheels were later removed and she was made into a twin screw diesel propeller. When she was owned by Georgian Bay Transportation Company of Midland, Ontario, she ran from there to Parry Sound and among the Thousand Islands of Georgian Bay. She was dismantled at Midland in 1955.
