Abstract
This thesis examines a transmigrant community's multi-layered identity by focusing on its members' affiliations with regional, national and hyphenated identity categories, going beyond the explicit focus on national-level identities that preoccupy many studies on transmigrant identity. This thesis argues that regional, national and hyphenated identity categories must be analyzed together in order to understand transmigrant identity. It also demonstrates the usefulness of the study of transnational religion in scholarly analyses of continued cross-border affiliation, and describes the first reported case of a system of 'religious remittance' which transmigrants use to assert continued membership in their 'home' regional identity category. Ethnographically, this study describes the life and migration histories of the Cocullese transmigrants to Canada, providing insight into this topic through an Italian Canadian case study.
