"La fable mystique" costituisce non soltanto il vertice dell'avventura gnoseologica di Michel de Certeau, ma anche un imprescindibile punto di riferimento per gli studi (filosofici, teologici, linguistici, semiotici) sulla mistica. Attraverso l'idea di "assenza" del soggetto che non coincide mai con se stesso, Michel de Certeau riesce a individuare nel linguaggio mistico il "proprium" di quell'idea di soggetto che si sviluppa nell'epoca moderna e che, ancora oggi, è oggetto di analisi filosofiche. Il soggetto mistico e, più ancora, il suo "parlare", il suo "linguaggio", metonimizzano l'idea di "eccesso come mancanza" che è il cuore pulsante delle indagine certiane e che rappresenta, oggi, l'occasione per ripensare integralmente l'ordine del soggetto e dei suoi legami con il reale.
