Les indianophiles sont des personnes passionnées par les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord, au point de s'identifier dans une certaine mesure à eux. L'indianophilie est étudiée comme laboratoire de la construction culturelle. L'étude repose sur une enquête de terrain effectuée en France entre 1998 et 2002, avec des données complémentaires provenant d'un séjour au Québec (1999-2000). Elle comporte trois parties. Dans un premier temps sont étudiées les modalités de construction de l'univers indien par les indianophiles, selon un modèle générique de l'indianophilie en trois points : les connaissances au sujet des Amérindiens, les pratiques d'actualisation de l'univers indien, les représentations et régimes de l'indianité. La deuxième partie concerne les modalités d'implication personnelle dans l'univers indien et les différents modèles dynamiques de l'indianophilie. Enfin, le phénomène indianophile est replacé dans une double perspective, historique et anthropologique.
