Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Hawks-Predators, Canucks-Flames begin tonight For half of the playoff teams in the NHL's Western Conference, this is new territory. The other four are very used to playing in the postseason. Take one of the series beginning tonight. On one side, the Nashville Predators, making their first playoff appearance after missing out for two straight years. Their opponents are the Chicago Blackhawks, a team which won the Stanley Cup twice in the previous five seasons. Hawks captain Jonathan Toews says that experience gives them plenty of confidence, but he thinks the Predators will be tough to beat... CUT Both the Hawks and Predators went on losing streaks to end the season, but the Hawks will get a boost from winger Patrick Kane, who is returning earlier than expected from a broken clavicle. The other series beginning tonight pits two teams which weren't expected to make the postseason. The Vancouver Canucks are back in the postseason after missing out last year, facing the Calgary Flames, who are making their first playoff appearance since 2009. Both come in with some baggage. The Canucks may rely on backup goalie Eddie Lack after starter Ryan Miller gave up five goals in his return from injury. The Flames have gone against all statistical reasoning to make it this far--they ranked near the bottom of the NHL in most possession figures. Speaking of playoff newcomers, the Winnipeg Jets are in the postseason for the first time since rejoining the league--and its fans are showing that excitement, with Jets playoff tickets selling out in five minutes. But that happiness may be wrecked by the Anaheim Ducks, a team which pulled out 33 wins in one-goal games this year. Along with the Jets and Ducks series, the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild matchup will also begin Thursday. Both teams are coming in on hot streaks. The Blues surged past the Predators and Blackhawks to claim the Central Division. Their reward is facing the team who has been on fire since trading for goalie Devan DOOB-nik. In 38 straight starts, he won 27 of them, with a goals-against-average of 1.78.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
